Drum Major Instinct, and Life’s Blue Print – Our Better Selves

Drum Major Instinct, and Life’s Blue Print – Our Better Selves

Every now and then, we need to remind ourselves of our humanity and needed humility. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was a philosopher, minister, husband, parent, and activist for social justice. His focus on racial equality for African Americans is known the world over. But there's even more to Dr. King than social activism, many of his messages and speeches also focused on various aspects of interpersonal and international relations, the destructive nature of egos gone awry, and the importance of taming our worst interpersonal emotions and desires.
This episode isn't about race or ethnic turmoil. It's about human nature and his thoughts on how to avoid the trap of some who believe everyone else is worthy of respect except themselves. I've also included audio excerpts from some of his speeches and sermons. I hope you find it interesting, and if you do, please consider sharing this episode with family, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues.

The goal of my podcast is to have interesting guests share their thoughts on different issues, have guest co-hosts to discuss various topics (especially those that offer humor), and even share short episodes in which I discuss thoughtful and even heartwarming issues.

Aware - That's a Good Thing

Aware - That's a Good Thing

Being aware of what we say and do are important.  Of course, this word "aware" is now often associated with the new word, "Woke," and it's thoroughly weaponized to the point many people are offended at others who are "aware" or "woke" to slights and even injustices.  This is especially true concerning racial and ethnicities, gender issues, religion, and even against people who have physical and emotional challenges.  This short episode is about this topic.  I find peace in being aware or woke to the plight of others.  I hope this is the same with many of my listeners.

Bigotry is Out In The Open and Appears Almost Fashionable Again - Disgusting!

Bigotry is Out In The Open and Appears Almost Fashionable Again - Disgusting!

Various social media outlets and some podcasts openly foment bigotry, racism, antisemitism, islamaphobia, and spew anti LGBTQ hatred. To be certain, this kind of thinking has been, is, and will always be. But there was a time when openly and brazenly spouting this hate-filled garbage would have been relegated to the darkness of maybe close family and friends, or some obscure publication. No more, it's on Twitter and all manner of other media outlets. Indeed, there's even a major cable news network via which some of its hosts traffic in and encourages dislike or even hatred of people of color and the LGBTQ community.
It's gotten to the point where a White nationalists/racist and a Black antisemite can dine with a former US president, without major coordinated condemnation or repudiation from that president's political party.
Just as we have a problem with mass shootings that's normal in American society, it's now normal for bigotry to be out in the open with plenty of people jumping on that disgusting train of society-destroying bile. As I discuss in this episode, whether White, Black, Jew, Muslim, Christian, Asian, faith-based or atheist, all must speak out against this senseless hatred. Don't give anyone, regardless of race or gender or religion, a free pass to divide us as a nation and as a people.

Demonization of the Other Works, But At the Peril of Representative Democracy If We Let It

Demonization of the Other Works, But At the Peril of Representative Democracy If We Let It

In theory and often in practice, liberal democracy principles exist in various Republics, not just in the United States.  The right to vote is what citizens expect and deserve as part of a kind of citizens' contract with the government in those countries.  In fact, the right to vote is codified in many constitutions as a matter of law.

However, liberal democratic principals have always been under fire and pressure from would be autocrats, authoritarians, war lords, strong men, and those who would enrich themselves and their families.  One element in pressuring the downfall of liberal democracies is a charismatic leader  gaining followers and convincing them that their interest lies best in a single individual who will fix everything, including bringing back some unrealistic resemblance of the past.  You know.  Thinking that all was so wonderful a decade, two decades, or even centuries past.

As we all know, we humans have a great capacity for good and an equal (and sometimes greater) capacity for the opposite.  Suspicion of the other, racial and ethnic animus, distrust of immigrants, fear, and all manner of grievances are ingredients of a perfect toxic stew to turn citizens against each other.  Indeed, some of these would be leaders foment division of a country's electorate to perpetuate their thirst for power.

Often these leaders will lie, target low information voters, weaponize programs of social equity or justice, and even attempt to dilute the voting franchise as a means to divide the country.  And guess what; it's worked in the past, it's working now, and will continue to do so if people remain complacent.

A call to action is for citizens to exercise their right to vote in local and national elections, learn about government, review various issues and proposals on the ballot, become a high information voter, and avoid going in the direction of negativism that would-be autocrats seek and foment.

On today's solo episode, I discuss these topics and more.  I also play a short audio clip from an episode of a well known television series that first aired on January 24, 1963.  I've viewed this entire episode (season 4, episode 24) at least 5 times over the past 20 years.  Indeed, it's quite haunting in its relevancy to today's political environment in many countries who exercise liberal democratic principles.

As always, The goal of my podcast is to have interesting guests at time to share their thoughts on different issues, have guest co-hosts to discuss various topics (especially those that offer humor), and even share short episodes in which I discuss thoughtful and even heartwarming issues.

End Times? Whoa – Let’s Not Go there!

End Times? Whoa – Let’s Not Go there!

Even with all of the chaos and destructive human behavior in our world, there's still beauty when we stop, reflect, observe, and look for it.  This isn't pie in the sky nonsense.  Just as humans need ambition or at least are ambitious, we need goodness, kindness, and compassion to sustain the essence of who we should be.  It's still around us in so many extremely and almost imperceptible ways, but also in obvious large measure as well.  Join me in this short episode to do a reality check on human foibles of human destructiveness and human kindness.  Maybe it's not possible to have one without the other, but compassion for others is still at play when we look for and accept it, and contribute to it.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Who, Me? Yes. You!

Who, Me? Yes. You!

It's always a challenge to remain positive because of the constant drumbeat of hatred, world domination, disease, and mistrust of others.  But it's important for all of us to avoid the trap of thinking that only someone else - not you - can make a positive difference.  When you truly self-reflect and search your heart, you know YOU can bring a smile to someone's face, you can - and probably - have helped others without expecting or even wanting praise in return, and you may have even accepted the truism that you are important, even if only in a small way, in being here on this earth for a reason and it's not just to get a college education, to work at a job, or to make money.  There's so much more and starting with compassion and thoughtfulness is the beginning, middle, and there is no end.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts.  Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Flags - Symbols of Aspiration or Something Else?

Flags - Symbols of Aspiration or Something Else?

A nation's flag is often a symbol of pride and can signify that it's citizens are one people under that flag and constitution.  Indeed, the US flag is also such an important symbol of unity.  Yes, there must be acknowledgment that some people will use the flag as a rallying point of supremacy over others, exclusion of others, and even a longing for the "good old days" during which exclusion of whole swaths of Americans were demonized and relegated to almost a perpetual state of impoverishment as a demographic.  Fortunately, the American flag and the US Constitution actual stand for progression as a nation and oneness as a people.  Not always easy to get past the harmful rhetoric in today's political discourse, but our liberal democracy remains and still endures.

In this short episode, we'll visit the US Pledge of Allegiance and the American flag beyond just symbolism.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Mass Shootings – As Frequent as Monthly Utility Bills or Weekly Visits to a Coffee Shop!

Mass Shootings – As Frequent as Monthly Utility Bills or Weekly Visits to a Coffee Shop!

It's always saddening to hear or read the news of another mass shooting in America or any country for that matter.  Unfortunately, gun related deaths and mass shootings are normal in America.  No one can rightly proclaim that gun related deaths and mass shootings are shockingly infrequent or seldom occurances in this country.  Just as American football and baseball is as normal as apple pie, shooting deaths are daily events here and mass shootings are not too far behind on the frequency scale.  Can something be done for bend the curve of these violent events?  Absolutely, yes!  As with anything in our society it requires voting citizens to demand our politicians at the local, state, and national level take action.

Unfortunately, there is a heavy gun fetish in American society and strongly financed and managed efforts to thwart any effective gun safety and ownership measures in our society.  But that's where you, others, and I come into play.  Actions require our involvement, activism, and making it a point to exercise our right to vote at the ballot box for individuals and proposed legislation to bend this curve of carnage.  It took decades to end slavery, decades to recognize same sex marriage, decades to end government sanctioned segregation, and decades to finally guarantee the right to vote for all American citizens.  To say that it's impossible to deal with the horrors of gun-related deaths and mass shootings in America would admit that Americans have accepted these events as a norm before, a norm now, and a norm forever.  May it never be so.

Imposter Who? Syndrome What?

Imposter Who? Syndrome What?

Have you noticed there always seems to be a label for whatever condition we have, emotions we feel, kinds of thoughts we have, and even why some people laugh a lot while others are mostly sullen.  But this two-word description called "Imposter Syndrome" caught my attention this week.  This feeling that people have, and apparently many definitions specifically specifies this affliction to successful and accomplished individuals.  I suspect, it affects many average common folks as well.  During this short episode, I discuss the "Imposter Syndrome" concept not in the way of trying to explain whether this is just a phrase that will come and go within a few decades.  I just wanted to help open our minds to discussing this topic.  Indeed, maybe you or someone you know may have an attack of "Imposter Syndrome."  Sometimes it's good to chat about it.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Emotions, Intelligence, and Leadership Can Be Mutually Inclusive

Emotions, Intelligence, and Leadership Can Be Mutually Inclusive

Emotional intelligence or EI has been around for quite some time, since 1990.  Often people in leadership positions equate EI to "soft" skills, as if quality and thoughtfully positive emotions are something insignificant and shouldn't be equal to productivity.  Fortunately, the are others who believe EI is a must in terms of understanding one's own and the emotions of others.  Why would a supervisor, leader, subordinate, or colleague wish to work in a caustic work atmosphere where misunderstandings, mood swings, backbiting, and abusive emotionally behavior is the norm rather than the exception.  There are some leaders who appear to have an intuitive high EI, while others struggle with understanding leadership traits, intelligence, and their emotions.  Fortunately, EI can be learned.

Hopefully, you're a leader or supervisor, or a person who aspires to gain those positions who values understanding who you are, your aspirations, your positive and negative emotional thresholds, and how you can contribute to building a positive work environment.  I discuss this in this episode.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

What! You’re a Liberal or You’re a Conservative?

What! You’re a Liberal or You’re a Conservative?

There's nothing inherently wrong with being a political liberal or political conservative.  In liberal democracies, this is normal and expected.  Indeed, these two deltas and the various points on this spectrum is what keeps society progressing although it does appear to regress at time which is unfortunate.  Still, society perseveres and does not give up on democratic ideals and support for all its people.  Thank you for listening to this short episode as I discuss misunderstandings and commonalities among this political spectrum.  Yes.  Huge differences remain and certainly have diminished meaningful political discourse, this can be salvaged.  While all things are not possible, repairing this destructive rift is doable and it's a must. Roulette and Democracy – Don’t Gamble With the Future.

Roulette and Democracy – Don’t Gamble With the Future.

Our political discourse is still somewhat messy, frustrating, and needs repair, for sure.  Part of the repair process includes you - the voter - not just politicians.  It requires individual voter self-reflection on what's important for our country. Indeed, I do hope it remains the aspirational nature of our liberal democracy and the aspirational and living nature of our constitution.  If you must bet, always bet on the big "D."  Democracy.

The Possible Is Now Reality

The Possible Is Now Reality

There's absolutely nothing good about COVID-19.  It's killed so many people and robbed millions of others of good health.  In the wake of this health menace, commercial companies and governments developed and even embraced ways for certain employee positions to be productive even when away from the normal place of work.  This is called telework and remote work.  What was once almost considered a taboo topic in many circles is now embraced by many as a commonplace practice.  I discuss this worker paradigm shift in this episode.

Heat, Cooking, and Democracy!

What does heat have to do with democracy?  Maybe a lot and maybe nothing.  No.  This isn't a play on words in any way.  Just as atmospheric temperatures are rising across the globe, some would say the potentially dangerous implications of heated political rhetoric is reaching the boiling point in some liberal democracies in the world.  Well, I hope to introduce you to the Chef who's named democracy.  I prefer to keep to the person's title, Chef.  The Chef has some interesting thoughts and maybe you do too.  Give a listen.

What a History, Depending On One’s Perspective.

What a History, Depending On One’s Perspective.

Immigrants to America, especially in the earlier centuries is interesting.  Not just from the perspective of the thousands of success stories and events, but also from the perspective that's less than stellar and positive.  During this episode, I talk about Irish, Japanese, and Chinese immigrants; but also discuss briefly the situation concerning our Native American brothers and sisters.

It's absolutely fine, expected, and encouraged to celebrate the progress of the United States and its people.  Still, we should never downplay or overlook the past negatives that happened to various groups of people.  In many ways, creating the next success while understanding/acknowledging past wrongs is what truly makes a nation great.  This is especially true when nations actively seek to correct past wrongs with the objective of lifting up all people.  To do otherwise goes against the ideal of one nation of many people who are worthy and deserving of respect, the pursuit of happiness, and justice for all.

Freedom – Freedom From What or Freedom To Do What?

Freedom – Freedom From What or Freedom To Do What?

If you noticed something over the decades, it's the word "freedom."  It's used to express a desire for less oversight, less regulations, less restrictions, and list goes on and on.  Some use "freedom" as a way to express demonization of the other and a sense of strong nationalism, and even use it to stoke racial animus.   Yet others express "freedom" as wanting a free reign to gain more, to do more, and to own more.  Of course, there are those that express "freedom" as wanting less government or regulatory oversight.

Yet, there are others who want freedom to be able to have an education; to gain access to healthcare; to learn about the history of this country including warts and all; to exercise reproductive rights; the freedom to breath clean air and drink clean water regardless of their geographic location or economic station in life; and the freedom to have a safe workplace and be paid a reasonable wage for their labor.  These are the most important freedoms in any democracy that claims it's people have the right to a pursuit of happiness, equality, and justice for all.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Yes. Good Things Are Still Happening!

Yes. Good Things Are Still Happening!

Even though we can't ignore the various negative issues that impact our world, nation, and our collective and individual lives, there are still positive things happening each and every day.  Whether it's in the United States, Africa, Asia, South America, or Europe thoughtful and compassionate people are everywhere.  Indeed, it's very likely you are one of those people, and that should give us all hope.  Indeed, even in the midst of a chaotic world that appears to be always spinning out of control, well-meaning people and their individual and collective actions help keep us all grounded and hopeful.

In this episode, I discuss one particular group of young people in the western United States who are doing their part to make a positive difference for farmers and those who are food insecure in this country.  Yes, there are some young people that are ambitious and maybe want immediate gratification and praise on a constant basis.  But there are so many hundreds and thousands more young people who convert that ambition, drive, and energy into helping others in need.  In this episode, it's a message to all of us to not lose faith or desire in helping others.  As I've said on previous episodes, it's okay to feel good about doing good.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Wow, Some Serious Shifts Across the Land!

Wow, Some Serious Shifts Across the Land!

To say that this week's Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade was newsworthy and impactful is an understatement.  This cultural and women's reproductive rights issue is shaking many people (pro and con) to the core of their being.  There are still concerns that there may be other federally recognized rights of progression that could be reviewed, overturned, and remanded to individual states to decide the fate of a particular previously perceived right.  It's certainly a topic worthy of discussion, but thoughtful and non-incendiary discourse.  I hope you consider the thoughts in this short episode.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Frustration Can Be Catching, But So Are Acts of Kindness

Frustration Can Be Catching, But So Are Acts of Kindness

Sometimes we forget there are people doing wonderfully positive things even in the midst of the world's problems.  We give them credit for their efforts, for sure.  But there's so many simple acts of kindness that many people do each day as routine and often without any significant thought because that's who they are, and maybe who you are as well.  Yet, there are still others that do as little as possible in the acts of kindness arena.  They don't laugh much and even avoid potentially humorous situations as if this denotes personal or professional maturity.  Whichever direction one chooses, each person has a reason for what they do or don't do.

Still, please accept the value and practice of positive and wholesome humor, healthy belly laughs, and doing simple acts of kindness.  Who knows, it may even help ease some frustrations you may have at times, especially in many environments where genuine thoughtfulness, concern for others, and compassion are considered weaknesses.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

We're Back Here Again - Will It Ever Stop!

We're Back Here Again - Will It Ever Stop!

Yet here we are again.  Another racist inspired mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, on March 14, 2022.  It appears when there's a respite in racially and religious inspired mass shootings, we're jolted yet again with the horrors of the reality of what's happening in the United States.  As our society progresses on so many various commercial, environmental, and social issues, there seems to be a concerted effort to continue radicalizing people, especially some White males, to act out their hatred in a shower of bullets.  There are certainly good reasons for various levels of positive optimism about our future, but there is an insidiousness tumor of racial bigotry and racism that bursts at seams every now and then that causes us to question our aspirational nature of what is is to be an American.  As we turn the page from this recent horrific mass murder event, we must not ignore what's happening in hopes that it won't happen again.  Unfortunately, this kinds of race based violence is quite common in our country.  Americans of good nature can set the example in public and private behavior in not feeding this kind of racial animus and bigotry.  To do any less would betray the aspirational ideals of, not upon what this country was founded, but of it's wonderful possibilities for all Americans as, "We The People..."

Democracy - Complacency, Changing Winds, and What’s Important

Democracy - Complacency, Changing Winds, and What’s Important

During this episode, I mention a few challenges in American society, and especially challenges to our democracy if left unchecked.  Much of what I'm saying is nothing new to most listeners.  Still, it's important for all voting age citizens to consider voting in various elections.  Whether a rural, suburban, or urban voter, you have the right to help select leaders who speak about and truly believe in representative democracy, and believe that out of many we are one nation.

Repost: Femininity & Masculinity are Cool - Toxic Masculinity is Not

Repost: Femininity & Masculinity are Cool - Toxic Masculinity is Not

This is a reposting of a previous episode about "toxic masculinity" that I did in 2021.  In the US there is a quite organized effort to de-humanize and demonize those people who are LGBTQ.  There appears to be special emphasis on targeting and persecuting transgender women.  Some of the most vocal of those who oppose human rights of transgender people are often men.  There are probably many reasons why some men are triggered negatively by transgender women, which is quite unfortunate.  Indeed, various anti-gay and anti-transgender laws are being introduced and passed in a number of localities.  Yeah, "Toxic Masculinity" is alive and well, and it's harming our society and the emotional damage this may be causing to some trans youth is sad and cruel.  Many of us have heard the term "Toxic Masculinity" on television, radio, and social media.  It's now entered political discourse in unproductive ways.  I just wanted to take a step back for just a few minutes during this episode to chat about masculinity and femininity as norms and not inherently self or societally destructive.  But I also am quick to be specific when masculine traits of respect and concern for others, rooting for the dispossessed and the underdogs of our society, helping those less fortunate, believe and demonstrating acceptance of women and gays as something real men do and don't fear are wonderful and normal.

Unfortunately, there's the other side side of masculinity that turns toxic when men want to harm others for not being "manly" or tough, and disrespect others because they are different.  Yes, this kind of toxic masculinity isn't anything new but it's certainly more pronounced as a kind of badge of honor.  Anyway, I do hope you listen to this episode and share it with friends, family, and associates.

The goal of my podcast is to have interesting guests share their thoughts on different issues, have guest co-hosts to discuss various topics (especially those that offer humor), and even share short episodes in which I discuss thoughtful and even heartwarming issues.

Ouch! The Slap Heard Around the World – But What About Everything Else!

The 2022 worldwide televised Oscars event was, well, truly eventful!  The night witnessed the first ever best actor nominee - Will Smith - sucker slap presenter and comedian Chris Rock on live television.  It was a sad and disgusting event of toxic masculinity parading as male chivalry.  But there's something else unfortunate about that situation, it's consuming dinner conversations, at work conversations, water cooler conversations, and even bar and lounge conversations.  It happened, it was eventful, it was sad and disgusting, but move on we all must.  There are other situations in the world and maybe in your immediate community that require attention.  Yes.  This event was the slap heard around the world, but we must deal with more pressing issues that influence and affect our daily lives, our communities, the world, and this planet.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

The Conflict in Ukraine 24/7 – Take a Moment to Breath and Refresh

The Conflict in Ukraine 24/7 – Take a Moment to Breath and Refresh

Just as COVID-19 pandemic consumed the airwaves and social media for almost two years, the war in Ukraine is now the main topic of each day and each hour of every day.  The pandemic was truly a destructive worldwide pandemic that influenced our lives and livelihoods, increased income and often ethnic and racial inequality.  Some even further weaponized this pandemic in fomenting fears of the other, especially people of Asian descent.

With the Russia invasion of Ukraine, the constant and overwhelming media coverage of the carnage and despair of the Ukrainian people is causing emotional distress for many people.  And now the media's heavy coverage of talk of a possibility for chemical and nuclear weapons to be introduced in this equation is causing many people to ponder the heavy question of whether we're close to the outbreak of world war three.

This short episode offers no solutions and doesn't delve into the politics and real security concerns of Russia's unjust, uncalled for, and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.  But we cannot ignore the heavy negative emotional toll it's taking on people.  We're now facing a recovery of sorts from maximum mitigation efforts to combat COVID-19, and now we've transitioned into a new level of dread with the crises in Ukraine.

It's okay to disconnect from this 24/7 news coverage of this war, associated carnage, and seemingly endless despair.  Yes, it's fine to consume the news, but we must avoid being consumed by it to the point of emotional bewilderment and even depression and a kind of fatalism.  It's okay to disconnect from the constant drumbeat of war and take moments or even days to breath and refresh yourself.

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at times.

Friendships Are Complicated and That’s Okay - With Guest Co-Host Micaela Baldivieso Gutierrez

Friendships Are Complicated and That’s Okay - With Guest Co-Host Micaela Baldivieso Gutierrez

Have you noticed that even in the best of times friendships can be complicated.  The weather can be perfect, your mood can be perfect, your work-life balance may appear to be just right or close to it, but friendships may come and go.  Unfortunately, often for reasons many of us don't quite comprehend.  It affects all of us at one time or another.  Whether young, middle aged, or elderly, the beauty and pitfalls of friendships often influence our daily lives and emotions.

There are no answers to the friendship puzzle, but my guest co-host - Micaela "Mica" Baldivieso-Gutierrez and I chat about this subject on today's episode.  No, our discussion, although humorous quite a bit and somewhat serious at times, is not from a sociologist's perspective.  It's just a general chat concerning friendship experiences and thoughts that people have throughout life.  So, please enjoy the show today.  Mica and I enjoyed the discussion of friendships, and we hope you will find it interesting too!

The goal of my podcast is to discuss interesting topics either in solo episodes or with guests and guest co-hosts. Sharing thoughts on different issues, especially those that are humorous, thoughtful and thought-provoking, meaningful, insightful, and even heartwarming at time.

"World Happiness Report" - What We Can Learn From It

"World Happiness Report" - What We Can Learn From It

The The World Happiness Report is a publication of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network released annually in March.  We've all seen or heard about Finland often ranking number one in happiness in this report yet again.  After reviewing, I can understand why Finish people - collectively - would rate high on the happiness meter.  There's no single factor that determines this happiness quotient.  The survey includes reviewing levels of trust, benevolence, freedom, income, and life expectancy.

This 2021 report doesn't elevate Finland as angelic or demonize the countries that are on the lower end of the spectrum in any way.  But it does give a glimpse of what people may consider important, satisfactory, and whether government is benefiting all residence or just a select few because of position or power.  As you listen to this episode, you will note some interesting statistics, not boring quantitative analysis of those stats.

Three Words: “Why,” “What,” and “Who” – Mindboggling? Maybe Not!

Three Words: “Why,” “What,” and “Who” – Mindboggling? Maybe Not!

As we all navigate our individual and collective paths through life, there are successes and challenges that ripple throughout our existence.  That's totally fine because that's, well, life.  But as people deal with frustrations, anger, joy, and happiness, these emotions can create bumps in the road.  Sometimes it's maybe a good idea to self-reflect on these three words, "Why," What" are we, and "Who" are we.

To get our creative and thoughtfulness juices flowing, I discuss these issues on this short episode.  Nothing too deep or even remotely emotional, but exploring that it's fine for each of us to ask, "Why" am I the way I am and think the way I do; "What" am I besides just being a human; and "Who" am I.  Some people may not admit it to others, but we all go through this kind of self-reflection, which can be somewhat enlightening and the start of gaining a tip of wisdom of sorts.

The goal of my podcast is to have interesting guests periodically share their thoughts on different issues, have guest co-hosts to discuss various topics (especially those that offer humor), and even share short episodes in which I discuss thoughtful and even heartwarming issues.

“Thank You For Your Service” – Although Not Serving for Thanks

“Thank You For Your Service” – Although Not Serving for Thanks

There are thousands of people from all walks of life, with varying educational backgrounds, and in different vocations doing meaningful things to make this world and our lives worth living.  Workers include healthcare providers, military service women and men, teachers, refuse and recyclables collectors, wait staff and cooks at restaurants, gig economy workers as delivery partners with Uber & Uber Eats, Lyft, GrubHub, DoorDash, and even volunteers who work in hospices helping to bring sunshine and care for terminally ill patients.

In the US, we are quick to utter the words, "Thank you for your service" to military active duty members and veterans.  Indeed, they deserve this recognition and more.  Yet there are still other workers that help maintain our society to keep in functioning along the lines of healthcare infrastructure, water and sewage systems, the nation's electrical grid, public safety and law enforcement, farm to table supply chain, faith-based ministries, elder care and child care, and even school crossing guards and yoga instruction.

We often overlook the millions of people contributing to keeping our society functioning.  When COVID-19 struck, many of these professionals weren't able to step back and stay home when various states, cities, and hamlets went into reduced in office and at work presence.  They continued working throughout this entire time.  Sadly, many succumbed to this dreaded disease.  Yet workers from every background, ethnicity, nationality, and gender persevered and continued working to the best of their abilities.  Unfortunately, these non-military workers and fellow human beings are usually overlooked even though many have been labeled "essential Workers."

Even on important federal holidays, many people often have to work.

Maybe the next time we go into a coffee shop, store, healthcare facility, standing next to a public safety/law enforcement official, pass a school crossing guard, or happen to be in close proximity of the worker who collects our refuse each week, consider uttering these words to them as well, "Thank you for your service."

The goal of my podcast is to have interesting guests share their thoughts on different issues, have guest co-hosts to discuss various topics (especially those that offer humor), and even share short episodes in which I discuss thoughtful and even heartwarming issues.

Optimism & Persistence Meet - A Chat With Guests Zhanna Imel (Optimism) and Ardian Maloku (Persistence)

Optimism & Persistence Meet - A Chat With Guests Zhanna Imel (Optimism) and Ardian Maloku (Persistence)

There are many reasons for concern in the world, including issues with global warming, violent conflicts, pandemics, natural and manmade disasters, and so much more.  However, there are many reasons for optimism and persistence including to make things better for our planet, improve the health of lives the world over, reduce poverty, and belief that we humans can make a positive difference in our own and in the lives of others.

My two guests - Zhanna Imel and Ardian Maloku - are to such optimistic and persistent people.  Zhanna (twenty something) was adopted from an orphanage in Kazakhstan.  She came from a life of difficulty and not the best outlook for her future.  Once in America, moved around with her adopted parents for many years.  Finally, living in a RV with her Mother and Brother always moving, always, on the go, and different schools.  When you hear Zhanna's voice on this episode, you'll understand her commitment to a brighter future for herself and others.  She's now in the US Foreign Service (US Department of State) as a US Diplomat.  Although life wasn't that easy for her, she never lost her sense of optimism.

Ardian (a young thirty something), a former Albanian refugee who's family escaped war torn Kosovo when he was just years old.  He's seen death and destruction up close.  He arrived in the States without being able to speak and read English.  There were many instances Ardian could have gotten involved with the wrong crowd, sought the wrong things, or looked for some imaginary east path to financial or material success.  But his goal was to become a US Diplomat and serve his adopted country in public service.  Ardian is now in the U.S. Foreign Service (US Department of State) as a US Diplomat.  Even when life through him some difficult curves, he persevered to make a positive difference for himself and others.

As you listened to their voices, Zhanna and Ardian remind us that it's fine to be optimistic and to persist to be our better selves.  I do hope you consider sharing this episode with others who may find their stories interesting as new US Department of State Foreign Service Professionals.

Are You Hungry? Maybe Not, But Others Are!

Are You Hungry? Maybe Not, But Others Are!

Images of people, especially children, in hunger is disturbing sad, and appears perpetual.  Although there are millions of hungry and often times starving populations the world over, there are hundreds of thousands of concerned and active people working diligently to alleviate this plague of hunger and starvation.  And, yes, there are commercial and even some wealthy individuals and organizations doing their part to end this problem.

By the way, there may be those who believe there's just not enough food being produced to feed everyone on our planet.  Well, studies from the UN, non-governmental organizations, educational and research institutions, and non-profits have confirmed there is plenty of food to alleviate hunger.  Unfortunately, waste, overconsumption, consumer demand for certain food products, and global warming all contribute to this human-influence conditions.

I share some thoughts and statistics about the world hunger issue, and it's not just hunger associated with underdeveloped and less developed countries.  Countries with developed economic, social, and food production systems also have food insecure populations.  One point is certain, all of us can do our small and sometimes significant parts to alleviate this problem.  We must avoid the knee-jerk reaction and trap that assumes those who are chronically hungry and malnourished is entirely their fault.  We also must avoid the rabbit hole of believing that if the hungry would just stop having children.  Should the economically middle-class and upper income people stop having children to reduce wasteful food consumption who often will discard food the minute it reaches the, "Best Used/Consumed By" date?  Of course not.

No.  We don't have to put off addressing food insecurity and hunger for some future decade because the world already produces enough food now to feed the worlds population.  Unfortunately, by one United Nation's study, food production to table results in over 1 billion tons of food waste each year.

All of us who are fortunate to have plentiful and nutritious food for daily meals, we can do our part in buying what we need for consumption not to excess, consider purchasing products that are produced sustainably and ethically, and not wasting perfectly edible products.

Another Discussion About Race? Yes. Another Discussion.

Another Discussion About Race? Yes. Another Discussion.

I'm grateful to listeners of my podcast.  A couple of you have asked why I and my guests have not discussed the hot button issue of race.  Indeed, I wanted to have discussions about people, successes, organizational excellence, leadership, and empowerment.  When race becomes the topic we all know that it's a minefield if not discussed thoughtfully and without rancor or accusations.  This subject often evokes sentiments of anger, guilt, resentment, and even hopelessness.  The feelings of hopelessness is because even as our society has made serious progress in racial discourse and tolerance, there are still demonstrably racist actions that desires to negate such positive movement.

Well, I've listened to you and on this this solo episode, I will touch somewhat lightly but significantly about race, especially discourse between Black people and White people.  I do hope you listen not in judgment of the other, but in understanding the justifiable disappointment Black people often feel when our nation stumbles to live up to its promise, which it often does just as there is demonstrable progress.  Also, it's important for Black people to acknowledge and appreciate that not all White people are practitioners of racism or oppression.

And for all races and ethnicities, both of these perceived overall identities are social constructs that are not based in DNA or facts, but have been accepted as truth to the detriment of our society and those of other nations.  Is it possible to acknowledge and accept differences in colors, genders, nationalities, and even religions?  Yes, of course.  Unfortunately, when the lights of those possibilities actual shine through our prejudices and bring hope, there always appears to be someone, some group,  some demographic, or even a political movement to dim the hopes with racist intent, tropes, and actions.  May we continue to resist the worst of our learned negative social constructs.

If you found this episode (and my podcast in general) interesting, please share it with friends, family, and associates.

Some Interesting International Commerce Issues – Veracity Worldwide CEO Dan Crocker Breaks It Down For Us

Some Interesting International Commerce Issues – Veracity Worldwide CEO Dan Crocker Breaks It Down For Us

International commerce is complicated, especially when considering environmental concerns, societal impact, sourcing, international trade pacts, intellectual property rights, differing business ethics, local political systems of government, and complex legal issues.  So, who or what entities help commercial companies navigate these issues of international commerce to help ensure businesses receive accurate information concerning their ventures overseas?

To help answer this question is my guest, Veracity Worldwide CEO Daniel "Dan" Crocker.  Dan is a former US Diplomat, international commerce expert, and holds advance degrees from University of Virginia, MIT, and Princeton.  My conversation with Dan helped peel away some of the complexities of international commerce during which he also explained how he and Veracity assist companies with commerce information associated with the respective countries.  Indeed, Veracity Worldwide's reach is extensive with offices in New York, London, Tokyo, and Melbourne.

As our conversation progressed, I was drawn into the depth of his knowledge and also his commitment to corporate and personal social responsibility.  True to this commitment, Dan is a board member of the "Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington."

Generation Z and Generations - A Chat With Summer Shaffer, Co-Founder of Moxis LLC

Generation Z and Generations - A Chat With Summer Shaffer, Co-Founder of Moxis LLC

It appears that so much of human relations are based on generational perceptions.  To this point, there are letters assigned to each generation grouping to further define everyone.  Yes.  Much of the findings about generational specific behaviors are confirmed by rigorous research, analysis, and via various studies.  However, these generational alphabet associations have at times caused a generational divide instead of increased understanding.

To help us sift through some of the nomenclatures, perceptions, and facts is my special guest today - Summer Shaffer.  Summer is a highly sought after speaker and consultation in helping audiences, companies, and other organizations understand and increase understanding of this important topic.  Summer is the co-founder of Moxis LLC (https://moxis-co.com/), along with company co-founder Deborah Meyer, which seeks to bridge the generational divide.  As an aide to better understanding our generational unity instead of division, here's the link to Summer and Moxis LLC's helpful and free resource guide for additional thought and consideration:  http://tinyurl.com/559sn4kj

Indeed, this chat with Summer provided much needed enlightenment on this subject.  I hope you have come away with a similar understanding that different generations, well, they are not all bad (sorry for the play on words)!

Who's Minding the Children - A Stay At Home Dad!

Who's Minding the Children - A Stay At Home Dad!

I'm still amazed at the complications, endless love, and often some work/professional sacrifices women put forth as stay at home moms.  Indeed, many husbands and partners who are also stay at home dads also face similar joy and challenges.  I decided to invite a guest to chat about this very issue.  His name is Lou Moree who is a stay at home dad.  In fact, Lou is the only person of whom I know that's a stay at home dad.

Lou and his wife have two children in middle school and they keep him quite busy.  Over the years since his son and daughter were born, Lou and I have chatted about what was and is it like for him to transition from a banking and finance professional, especially in the dot.com era of his time with startups that are now multimillion dollar companies, to now being a stay at home Dad while his wife continues her professional career.

Well, I do hope you listen to this episode to gain Lou's perspective that I hope you will find interesting and even somewhat enlightening.

Sometimes We Do Think & Say “Hmm” About This and That: A Humorous Chat With Guest Co-Host Dylan Mansa

In this episode, we will take a break from the more serious topics discussed in most of my podcast episodes.  As with many of us, it's good to step back and enjoy a conversation, even when it's about nothing special in particular, interlaced with humor.  This is just such a time, right!  Although not always, there are times when we ponder an action, a result, a state of being, and so many other things with a simple utterance or thought of, "Hmm."  During this episode, Dylan Mansa, joins me in exploring some of the things that may even caused you to think or say, "Hmm."  It's simple chatting and humor.  By the way, if you're into canine dog mania stuff, you can even skip to time mark 14:37 for some chuckles!

A Young Person’s Mix of Politics and Community Involvement – A Chat with Wael Khalifa About His Path Forward

I find discussions with young adults interesting and often enlightening in many ways.  It's clear they view their future in ways filled with fun, laughter, career progression, and, yes, even making money along the way at some point.  If you're similar to me, your conversations with young adults are often replied with some apprehension, but usually with a lot of optimism.

With this episode's guest - Wael Khalifa - a young professional, we talk about his path of being a world traveler, public service in state and city governments, and now as a Community Development Manager in a tech company.  Oh, and did I mention Wael is also an American who happens to be of the Muslim faith.  Super!  Starting at time mark 25.46 Wael brings his intriguing and encouraging thoughts about religious tolorance. There's a wonderful journey that Wael and I unpack doing this episode.  Come along and join us!

Leadership - What's That All About!

Leadership - What's That All About!

Thank you for listening to this episode about leadership. I’m solo with this episode chatting about my thoughts and quotes of others about leadership.

No. Leadership isn’t about how to lead by the numbers, by the alphabet, or by reading the latest leadership guides. Indeed, it’s a combination of those and so much more. You don’t need a PhD in leadership psychology, attend the latest big name university or school to learn much of what we already really know, but often may be reluctant or too timid put into practice.

Indeed, we have all been impressed with leadership quotes and thoughts of media-worthy industry, government, and social leaders. However, even with our own work organizations and groups, there are truly thoughtful, compassionate, and uplifting people who demonstrate the special compatibility between individual progress and organizational objectives. Some people in leadership roles practice “no employee/colleague” left behind as a standard instead of the exception. Yes. I acknowledge the concepts are easy to absorb but often can be complicated to put into practice. We have to acknowledge the individual capabilities, desires, deficiencies; and some organizational bottom lines complicate the concept of the “rising tide lifts all boats.” Still, thoughtful leadership characteristics and setting positive examples for all to follow must be individual professional objectives.

If you found this episode (and my podcast in general) interesting, please share it with friends, family, and associates.

A Woman Executive In Virtual Reality” – A Chat with Corporate Executive Megan Cornish

A Woman Executive In Virtual Reality” – A Chat with Corporate Executive Megan Cornish

Corporate America is undergoing a positive trend in the number of women in the workforce over the past decades of course.  Yes.  There's even an increase in women in corporate executive positions.  A recent study by Silicon Valley Bank found just 56 percent of startups have at least one woman in an executive position, and only 40 percent have at least one woman on the board of directors.  The study also found that 59 percent of startups have some type of program in place designed to increase the number of women in leadership — and that the founding team’s gender often determines which executive roles women hold at startups.  Quite interesting to say the least.

For this episode, I'm speaking with my special guest, corporate executive Megan Cornish.  Megan is the Vice President of Government, Marketing, and Promise Virtual Reality (VR) at Moth+Flame.  M+F is a provider of immersive learning experiences for enterprise scale customers across a range of verticals.  We've learned about VR and artificial intelligence (AI) combined to make learning a truly interactive experience.  Plus, Megan explains her path from working in the US congress, entering the business world, serving on various companies' board of directors, and her thoughts on girls and women who aspire to enter the corporate world and eventually into a "C-Suite" executive position.

Isn't it interesting to hear stories or even telling your own stories about various travels.  You know, the kinds of travels that take you across town, ro another, across the country, or even to a different country.  Well, my special guest today is Serina Hull.  She is a twenty something young woman who dared to make the big leap to go east.  We're talking about to the Far East to Beijing, China!  She received her undergraduate degree from a university in Florida in business and Chinese language.

Was it an adventure?  Absolutely, yes!  Adjusting to the culture, the food, the working environment, and even the night life.  Thank you for joining  me as I chat with Serina about her adventure in receiving her graduate degree and her employment in Beijing, and now back to the U.S.

Please consider sharing this episode with friends and colleagues, but especially young people who are considering learning and working abroad.

By the way, Serina's blog is interesting too:  https://qiosity.com/

Made It Out - Not Making Out!

Made It Out - Not Making Out!

If you're similar to me and many others, we marvel at the success of those who have escaped difficult circumstances.  In fact, we celebrate them and their success.  You know me, I'm always considering other issues that may make this concept somewhat more complicated when scratching the service.

Much of our wonderment about the success of others is associated with those who have become "self-made" millionaires and billionaires.  Some of whom may have come from humble beginnings.  Indeed, I too am amazed at the often meteoric rise of these fellow human beings.  But what about those who have not ascended to the high stratosphere of stardom, or monetary, or material wealth?  Often these people are some of the most humble, thoughtful, kindhearted, and are often successful in their endeavors.

In this episode, my guest is Ardian Maloku and is of those thoughtful people.  He is an American who is was a former refugee who, at 13 years young, fled with his parents from the then terrible violence in Kosovo.  He and his family endured dangers, hardships, the images of death, and living in a refugee camp until they petitioned for and was granted entry into the United States.  Now, in his 30s, Ardian remains thoughtful, kindhearted, and humbled as he embarks on a new path into the U.S. Department of State's U.S. Foreign Service.

In my conversation with Ardian, you will hear his humor, the realities of hardship, the optimism of hope, and success.

Your Real Estate, But Not In Your State: A Chat With Brian Kressin

Your Real Estate, But Not In Your State: A Chat With Brian Kressin

For many people, the idea of buying a house appears daunting and complicated.  Guess what?  It is daunting in many respects and complicated with all of the rules and regulations associated with real estate.  Will this be a live-in home for the buyer, will it be a second or vacation home, or will it be a rental property.  If this is an investment property, will the owner manage the property directly or will the owner hire a property management company.

Yes.  To a person who does not own a home, the myriad of questions is enough to cause many people to back off from considering home ownership.

Good news!  Today's guest, Brian Kressin, is a successful small real estate investor who owns multiple dwellings and manages them long distance.  In fact, Brian's international related work has placed him overseas for the past 15 years.  Indeed, he will explain some of the tips about investing in real estate and managing properties from afar.  He's also the author of the book, "Investment Real Estate For The Absentee Landlord: How To Invest In And Manage Real Estate From Overseas."

So, grab a cup or glass of your favorite beverage and listen in.  Even if you're a experienced homeowner, there may be some tips that will cause the light to shine in your mind for next steps.

The Future Is Possible for this Young Person: A Short Chat With Guest Michael White

The Future Is Possible for this Young Person: A Short Chat With Guest Michael White

Many listeners probably know of young people who come from humble economic backgrounds, and other who may have had privileged social environments since birth.  There's always one common factor in this social construct, young people wish to succeed.  It's true that not all things are possible, but so much can be probable.

A while back, I was fortunate to meet Michael White.  Michael works at a well known coffee-bakery shop for the last two+ years starting in high school.  Michael's story is positive and would cause any listener to know that he believes a positive future is possible because he has already started along that positive path now.  He has been accepted to Florida International University (FIU) and will start as a freshman undergraduate in the fall of 2021.

I enjoyed chatting with Michael for this short but meaningful episode, and I hope you will find pleasure listening in.

The Middle East: It's Not All Sand

The Middle East: It's Not All Sand

The Middle East is a region of the world with untold centuries of history.  As most geographical regions, Middle East history has dealt with migration, empires, enlightenment, philosophers, commerce, and violent conflicts.  In recent history, much of the focus has been on the aspects of conflict and oil.

However, there is so much more to that fascinating part of the world.  The part part of family importance, aspirations for a better life, positive economic trends, and mutually beneficial economic trade often escapes world news in favor of violent conflicts.

To help us unwind some of this mystery, my special guest is Ambassador Douglas A. Silliman.  Ambassador Silliman is a recently retired senior US Diplomat with over 35 years of expertise in the Arab culture and international affairs.  He was Ambassador to Iraq and Kuwait, and is now President of The Arab Gulf States Institute In Washington (https://agsiw.org/).

Ambassador Silliman also serves on the board of advisors of the Bilateral US-Arab Chamber of Commerce, which helps American businesses expand their international business and trade ties, especially in the Middle East and Gulf region. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Diplomacy.
