Discovery

Episode description

Series II | Episode 7

In this science-themed episode, Regius Professor Graham Hutchings tells his story of scientific discovery. Since the 1970s, Prof. Hutchings has been a key player in the field of heterogeneous catalysis.

Gold metal was always thought to be a very inactive metal, with no other uses than as a material for fine jewellery. Prof. Hutchings was a pioneer in discovering the use of gold to catalyse the reaction in making PVC plastic, eradicating the use of poisonous mercury metal catalysts, which was responsible for minamata disease in Japan.

With thanks to Prof. Graham Hutchings of Cardiff Catalysis Institute. Here is an article about his life’s work: https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/innovation/meet-our-innovators/graham-hutchings
