One of the most common training issues we are asked about with a newly adolescent dog is “He jumps up on people all of the time.” After spending some time talking with people it becomes clear that from a young age the dog has learned that if they jump up on someone they get attention – someone looks at them, speaks to them and probably even touches them. The more they jump up, the more attention they receive and pretty soon we have an accelerating circle of undesired behavior. This is why we recommend dealing with this behavior from an early age by never allowing jumping to be rewarded while at the same time amply rewarding the dog for keeping all four feet on the ground.
