This week on Protecting our Public Health, Sharity is joined by Marilynn Rothen, RDH. Sharity and Marilynn discuss interpersonal interactions with patients highlighting successes in her work at the Dental Fears Research Clinic at The University of Washington.
“Dentistry is a social interactions”
“It was like a checkbox that needed to get checked off, a one way interaction”
“I leaned to approach people with something positive I saw when I looked in their mouth, even if that was a stretch”
“We just don’t know what their barriers are”
“The response was, I am 40 years old, I think I know how to take care of my teeth, even if they don’t say it, they are thinking it”
“We would be scaling away and I'm short on time so I will deliver my oral hygiene education while my hands are in their mouth and they can’t respond, I'm not sure they are even listening… but I am getting it done”
“I try to give them an opening that there isn’t a right or wrong answer I am looking for, there are lots of possibilities, tell me what you are doing”
“It’s a team, it's not you, it's not them, it's us coming together to have a conversation to find out what will work well for them”
“Though that wasn’t what I hoped they would pick they selected something they thought would work, and it worked!"
