Ep. 306 – JLU – Chaos at the Earth's Core The DCAU Review

Continuing with their month of season three Justice League Unlimited reviews has the Good Brothers on a journey like no other as they review "Chaos at the Earth's Core" on this week's episode. The hosts discuss why this episode feels and may have been served better as a Justice League season 1 story, Kamandi and He-Man references, a huge miss when it came to including a classic DCAU needle drop and a unrecognizable double-voice casting performance from a series regular. Plus the hosts chat about some inconsistencies in Metallo's vulnerabilities, why the Stargirl/Supergirl rivalry doesn't quite work and a new design for S.T.R.I.P.E. All of this and much more plus a preview of next week's Elseworlds visit for the first time in over 200 episodes await you on this week's all new DCAU Review! Ep. 153 – BTAS – Mudslide

The Man Who Killed Batman | Mudslide | The BATTASS Podcast

Continuing with another review of a classic Batman: The Animated Series cartoon, the Good Brothers continue in the second episode of the Clayface saga, titled “Mudslide.” The hosts talk a plot that has its ups and downs including an odd twist that ends up making Batman out to be a villain in the same vein as Ferris Boyle. Visuals steal the show however as a relatively unknown animation studio incorporates some elements of horror and old Hollywood lore to create an outstanding treat for the eyes. Cal and Liam also discuss another masterful score from the legendary Shirley Walker and a small but powerful voice cast that leans heavily on Batman and Alfred working on the main investigation and yet another great episode title card. All of this and a preview of next week’s episode await you on this week’s DCAU Review

Ep. 152 – BTAS – The Man Who Killed Batman

Joker | Das Batman-Projekt | Seite 11

It’s not an April Fool’s joke, the month of April is here and that means the Good Brothers are on to another month of reviews, this time returning to Batman: The Animated Series picking up where they last left off with the production order and the episode “The Man Who Killed Batman.” Liam and Cal discuss this episode that usually ranks high on most people’s lists of top BTAS episodes of all time. Hear them discuss a plot out of the zany, dark-humored mind of Paul Dini with directing and partial storyboards by Bruce Timm that has almost no Batman screen time, another legendary voice performance by Mark Hamill that includes his favorite monologue of the series, and a scene that made one of the hosts jump out of their seat with excitement. Plus an organ-heavy soundtrack from Shirley Walker and a great story about Arleen Sorkin’s kazoo performance! All of this, a preview of next week’s episode, and an update on the fan poll for inducting an episode into the Top Picks section on this week’s all-new DCAU Review!

The World's Finest on Twitter: "The Justice League Unlimited mini-marathon continues with "The Doomsday Sanction." Getting ready for Justice League vs. The Fatal Five by revisiting some of the biggest episodes from

The Doomsday Sanction

After a pitstop for last week’s 150th episode, The Good Brothers return to wrap up the month of Match with another entry into the Justice League Unlimited Cadmus story-arc with “The Doomsday Sanction.” Join the hosts as they discuss a plot that redeems an underutilized Doomsday, who was originally featured on the Justice League episode “A Better World.” Hear the hosts discuss whether or not the return of this major tentpole character was justified, the tendency of the series producers to subvert expectations with some important characters, why Dr. Milo’s return seemed a bit out of place,  why this episode could’ve flourished with a second part to it, and visuals that wow but are held back by the return of the terrible, no-good CGI. Plus a pair of musical cues that steal the show and another all-star voice cast that features some more fantastic work from multiple performers. Ep. 148 – JLU – Dark Heart

The World's Finest on Twitter: "The Justice League Unlimited episode "Dark Heart" debuted on this day (Dec. 11) back in 2004. Even with the solid front-to-back action beats and great character moments

Dark Heart

March is here and that means as the calendar page turns, Cal & Liam switch series, returning to cover Justice League Unlimited and the episode “Dark Heart.” This seminal episode lays the groundwork for some of the larger plot points used for the Cadmus arc that would define the #JLU, but this week the Good Brothers discuss a plot that asks the question “just what IS nanotechnology anyway?” Hear the hosts talk action that at the time seemed grand but now looks a lot like every superhero blockbuster, more out-of-place CGI, some wonky character models, and some of Batman’s new toys. Plus how the JLU greenlit episodes that focused on C-List level heroes, a pair of really solid voice performances from two very recognizable guest voice actors, and why the episode may be in line to be canceled in the future. All of that, a complete scorecard, a new special guest intro to the pod and a preview of next week’s episode on this week’s DCAU Review!

Ep. 147 – Batman Beyond – Sneak Peek

As we continue with our month of Batman Beyond reviews, we come to an oft-forgotten episode titled “Armory” which asks the age-old question, “What would you do to keep your lavish lifestyle intact, after losing your job due to corporate downsizing?” Okay, so maybe that’s not that much of an age-old question, but never fear because the Good Brothers are here to answer it anyway! Hear Cal and Liam discuss a plot complete with outdated technology and gender roles, what would make the average person go from zero to treason in no time, featuring a main-baddie that doesn’t talk which allows for action and music to be brought to the forefront. Plus the hosts list the voice cast, making an argument for a surprising addition to the DCAU Mt. Rushmore of voice-actors, and discuss #MyWarMachine(?!?) making his voice heard as Armory. All of this, more talk about Terry forgetting the suit’s invisibility, and much more on this week’s all-new DCAU Review!

Ep. 145 – Batman Beyond – The Last Resort

Episode 145 of the DCAU Review is here and the Good Brothers are continuing to review Batman Beyond with the next episode “The Last Resort.” Cal and Liam discuss the message behind this plot which focuses on a cult-like leader’s choice to abuse teenagers through an internment camp-like facility. The hosts talk about a variety of ways the story might have been more effective, the logic of Terry not using the invisibility function on his suit, Terry’s odd physical interaction with Chelsea, another inductee to the “Worst Dads in the DCAU” club, and a pair of voice performances from two actors from a pair of the most popular sitcoms of the last 40 years. Additionally, the hosts discuss why the biggest threat of the episode went unexplored, Bruce’s limited appearance for the second straight week, and preview next week’s episode on this week’s DCAU Review!

Kicking things off this month is the resolution to the Curare character’s story with the episode “Final Cut.” Hear the hosts talk about some similarities to a recently covered episode of Batman: The Animated Series, what James Tucker did that changed Curare’s arc forever, a music callback to “Rebirth” and trying to pinpoint one character’s unique accent. Plus, praise for one excellent sequence that would fit in any version of the Dark Knight, Max as Batman’s partner, speculation as to why one notable voice was cast as a character without dialogue and the hosts share their thoughts on whether the ending is satisfying for the Curare character or not. Happy Holidays from the DCAU Review! Plus, Bernie Sanders’ uncredited cameo, vocal performances from DC Animated veterans and the hosts preview next week’s final episode of 2020 while taking a minute to thank them for making this year their most successful to date. Ep. 134 – BTAS – I Am The Night

Batman 1 - Episodio 34 Streaming ITA - CB01

The Good Brothers are wrapping up the month of November with a review of Batman: The Animated Series episode “I Am The Night”, which tends to place high on most people’s “Best Of BTAS” lists. The hosts discuss a variety of topics including how this episode made it past standards and practices based on the very adult subject matter, why this episode wasn’t a favorite growing up, Batman in his feelings, animation that wasn’t the best, who the Jazzman best resembles, Batgirl foreshadowing and a sneaky retroactive Easter Egg from the very first episode of Batman Beyond. Cal and Liam go heavy on plot and visuals discussing yet another AKOM studios gaffe-filled production that includes what one host believes is the worst mistake they’ve ever seen in animation. Ep. 119 – BTAS – Day of The Samurai

Day of the Samurai" | DC Animated Universe | Fandom

Ep. 118 – BTAS – Moon of The Wolf

The unofficial Creature Feature month continues on the DCAU Review as the Good Brothers continue their month of Batman: The Animated Series coverage. This week our hosts review “Moon of the Wolf” which is based on a 1970s Neal Adams era Batman comic of the same title. Unfortunately for the hosts the comic seems to have been a bit more interesting as they quickly learn, due partly in fact to the return of Akom Production Co. as the team responsible for the animation. Other topics discussed include the lack of intelligence from each featured character, Bruce Wayne’s body dysmorphia, a soundtrack that introduces electric guitar for the first time to the DCAU soundtrack, speculation on the purpose of the cliffhanger ending, and a in-depth look at “Werewolfism.” Plus our hosts preview next week’s episode and highlight some connections from this episode to the larger DCAU continuity.

Ep. 78 – BTAS – Eternal Youth & Perchance To Dream

Image result for eternal youth title cardImage result for perchance to dream title card

The month of November is here, and Cal & Liam kickoff a month of Batman: The Animated Series reviews with a double feature! Never before have there been two polar opposite episodes featured on one podcast as the Good Brothers discuss the episodes “Eternal Youth” and “Perchance To Dream.” First, the brothers have what can only be described as shared disdain for a bizarre episode featuring #MyAlfred and the never before seen or heard from again Maggie. The brothers are fairly harsh in their criticism and comparison to a lost Batman ’66 episode but this episode does bring about the largest score disparity to date and for only the second time in DCAU Review history, a point deduction!

Up next the guys discuss one of the most universally loved episodes where we learn what it would be like if Bruce never put on the cape and cowl and instead lived solely as Bruce Wayne. Cal and Liam talk about some great subtleties in the soundtrack, the psychology of Batman’s ability to be happy and talk foreshadowing throughout the episode! Of course, they have full scorecards for each episode and an exciting preview of next week’s all-new DCAU Review!

This week’s episode entitled “Heavy Metal” is the direct sequel to the very first episode the boys covered this month. This week’s discussion includes a favorable plot for introducing someone capable of aiding Superman against Metallo, some memories of the introduction of the Steel character, a soundtrack with similar tones to one of the hosts’ favorites, the question of how a metal helmet can show expression and a preview for the show being covered in the month of November. All of this, plus Liam broadcasts from inside the Steel suit and Cal acts as if it’s completely normal…on today’s episode of the DCAU Review!

Ep. 75 – STAS – New Kids In Town

The 75th edition of the DCAU Review is a unique episode from Superman: The Animated Series that actually doesn’t have Superman in it at all. Cal and Liam discuss “New Kids in Town” on this week’s show, an episode that takes place in the future 30th century and then heads back to the past of rural Kansas to visit young Clark Kent in Smallville. The Good Brothers ponder as to why Brainiac has never utilized Kryptonite, why the villain going back in time is such a familiar trope this Legion versus the more recent versions, a lack of Legion theme son, the unique design of Chameleon Boy, Pa Kent being dumb again Brainiac’s cosmic sled, the age-old red underpants vs. no red underpants for Superman’s costume and much more!
