Bill Madden of Mad Fox Brewing Company

Hey there Brewery Lovers! First off, Richard screwed up multiple times by saying we were in Fairfax, Virginia. We were at Mad Fox Brewery in Falls Church, Virginia. Apologies to everyone for that error.

One request from The Brew Daddies: Please take 5 minutes to complete this survey from DCBeer.com to help us plan for major expansion in 2019.

In this episode, we spoke with legendary brewer Bill Madden of Mad Fox Brewing Company, who graduated from the Master Brewer Program at UC Davis in 1995 and has been a professional brewer for nearly a quarter-century. Richard and Bill reminisce about the beer scene in San Francisco in the 90s and Bill’s early days homebrewing. In 1995 Bill came to D.C. to brew at Capitol City Brewing Company.

The Brew Daddies discuss the incredible rise of hyper-local breweries and taprooms with Bill, and how challenging it would be to open a regional brewery in today’s extremely competitive market. They agree that the likelihood people will travel to try a brewery has been decreasing as more and more neighborhood taprooms open across the region.

Bill explains his commitment to real cask ale and how he sees the American craft beer industry moving away from traditional cask ales and toward wild fruit and candy additions that perhaps go beyond innovation. He talks about some of the exciting events coming up in the next few months and some unusual collaborations—including one with a local barber shop.

This is one of our favorite episodes and we really enjoyed our time with Bill. Mad Fox is definitely worth a visit!
