743: How an NFL Star Never Saw Football as an Identity, but an Avenue | Desmond Clark

About This Episode:

Desmond Clark has become one of the most decorated tight ends in Chicago Bears history. He joined the Monsters of the Midway in 2003, and quickly moved up the Bears’ record books. He ended his career ranked second All-Time in Bears history in receptions and touchdowns and third in receiving yards.

During the Bears’ 2009 season opener Clark was injured leaving him inactive for five games. Still he returned and played a key role down the stretch, scoring a touchdown in the Bears exciting upset win over the NFC North Champion Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football.

In 2008, Desmond started all 16 games at tight end for the fourth consecutive season for the Bears. Desmond and fellow tight end Greg Olsen combined for over 90 receptions and 925 yards, which ranked 3rd in the NFC. In 2007, Clark led all NFC tight ends in yards per catch (12.4 avg) and was fifth in receiving yards.

Clark was a major offensive factor in a season that saw the Chicago Bears head to Miami for Super Bowl XLI in 2006. Breaking out for a career season, Desmond hauled in a career high 626 receiving yards and team high 6 touchdown receptions. Clark had a strong showing in the Super Bowl, leading the Bears with six receptions and 64 receiving yards.

The all-time career ACC in receptions record holder and four-year lettermen at Wake Forest University, Clark scored at least one touchdown against every ACC opponent in his college career and finished 4th on the university’s all-time list with 20 career touchdown receptions. Over his four years as a Demon Deacon, Clark accumulated 216 catches for 2,834 yards and was named team MVP in his senior campaign while majoring in communications.
