The Judah and Tamar story of Genesis 38 interrupts our Joseph narrative, and for good reason. It points out a contrast of righteousness that will be thematic throughout the rest of the Bible. However, we need a little historical and contextual help to understand what is really going on in a story that is often perplexing and confusing for modern readers.
