The Sweet Sixteen of BSA Safety

Safety is job one for us adult leaders. A big part of safety is Youth Protection Training (YPT). This is done online and can be printed out from there. Committee Chairman, Scoutmasters, and cub Masters can also lookup other leaders' status and get printouts from the website.  Check your YPT status now. Do you remember “The Sweet Sixteen’s” of Scout Safety? Here is a quick reminder of safety concerns. 

  1. Qualified Supervision – Proper amount of trained leaders.
  2. Physical Fitness – Aproperet Safe activities.
  3. Buddy System – Time tested.
  4. Safe Area Or Course – Have a backup plane.
  5. Equipment Selection And Maintenance – The equipment/tools for the event is tested and working.
  6. Personal Safety Equipment – Helmets and life jackets don’t work unless worn correctly.
  7. Safety Procedures And Policies – All leaders need to make others aware of safety information. 
  8. Skill Level Limits – Know everyone's ability and stay within that level. 
  9. Weather Check – Be prepared for sudden weather changes. 
  10. Planning – Qualified leaders should go over the plan and Have an alternate plan. 
  11. Communications – Make others aware of the plans and back up. 
  12. Plans And Notices – Tour permits and permissions should be filed where needed. 
  13. First-Aid Resources – First aid supplies and skills may vary depending on the activity. 
  14. Applicable Laws – All scouts must follow BSA policy's in addition to any local laws. 
  15. CPR Resource – Strenuous activities should also always include a CPR trained leader. 
  16. Discipline – Scouts and Scouters can get severely injured if they do not listen to directions.
