Debra Bonnerwith, Deputy Commissioner of Dutchess County Social Services, and Donna Robinson, Foster Parent Liaison, discuss how Foster Care Services of Dutchess County improves the lives of children and families. The goal for each child is safe, nurturing temporary care with return to family if possible, or adoption if the family cannot be reunited. If neither is possible the agency provides preparation for independent living or discharge to another resource. They describe the entire process, which starts when the agency learns about a child in need of its services, includes screening, and concludes with the joy of foster parenting as well as the benefit to the child. Despite the rewards, there remains a need for more foster parents in Dutchess County.
