Medical Notes: Week of October 20, 2019

If you want to feel better about your spouse, look at pictures of him or her along with pictures of cute puppies and bunnies. A study in the journal Psychological Science shows that when married people are shown pictures of their spouse and then positive images, such as a puppy or a cute baby, they rate their partners in a more favorable light.”

Medical notes this week…

A new study shows that americans’ diets are getting better, but only by a little. The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that on a scale of one to 100, the american diet improved from a 56 to a 58 since 1999. Added sugars went down from 16 percent to 14 percent of daily calories, but that’s still more than doctors recommend. Low-quality carbs also went down, but are still higher than recommendations and make up the biggest part of the american diet.

If someone gets a new diagnosis of hearing loss, getting a hearing aid will lower their risk of being diagnosed with dementia, depression, or anxiety over the next three years. A study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society also shows that getting a hearing aid decreases the risk of fall-related injuries. However, even when people have insurance coverage for at least part of the cost, only about 12 percent of those with a diagnosed loss get hearing aids.

And finally, if you want to feel better about your spouse, look at pictures of him or her along with pictures of cute puppies and bunnies. A study in the journal Psychological Science shows that when married people are shown pictures of their spouse and then positive images, such as a puppy or a cute baby, they rate their partners in a more favorable light. Researchers explain that people associate things together and it has enough of an effect to positively impact a relationship.
