Episode 017: Trying New Things

Chalk and Rumpo choose games for one another to play.

Greetings and welcome to another episode of Push to Talk. This week’s episode was all about discussing the games that Chalk and Rumpo chose for each other to play. Rumpo wanted Chalk to try Valiant Hearts: The Great War, and Rumpo was tasked with diving into The Long Dark.

We actually struggled to figure out why this was a good podcast idea, but after playing our respective games we realized that it was about branching out and trying things that fell outside of our comfort zone. It’s no different than telling your friend that they absolutely must watch Game of Thrones, but having that friend tell you they’re not interested. You know they’ll love it, but dammit, you can’t force them. Chalk and I had to play because we were bound by the international rules of podcast. That’s a real thing. Look it up.

With The Long Dark, Rumpo found a game that he’ll definitely get more time out of. He put in four hours for the podcast and felt like he had a good idea of what the game offered, and the emotions that this brutal survival game were capable of evoking. Being lost in the snowy Canadian wilderness of The Long Dark had him recalling when he was young and his step-brother was actually lost in the woods.

Chalk barely got a passing grade for only putting 1.8 hours into Valiant Hearts: The Great War, but credit must be given to a busy man. He got a good sense for the art style and puzzle solving. Chalk did admit, however, that he needs to finish the game, something that Rumpo wholeheartedly agrees with. Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a story-driven title, and the only way to get the full experience is to finish it. We’ll keep you updated on that.

For next week, we have a special guest in mind that we’d like to bring in to talk about Twitch culture, what it’s like to be a full-time streamer (spoiler alert: not as glamorous as you think), and offer up some advice to those who would rather broadcast themselves blasting zombies than get a “real job” out there. We won’t drop their name just yet because we need to confirm, but it’s in the works.
