Today our guest is Cristina Palma who talks to us about making a difference to the world through social enterprise, and becoming a social changer/professional volunteer.
In the ShowNicola’s back in Greece, this time with sister Sarah. There have been parties and Roy delivered lunch to the ladies of Write Club when noisy neighbours obliged them to move venue. Judith updates the listener about her Weirdo newsletter, what happens in Women’s Shed, submitting her 100 words about starting over as a Promo Angel plus a new hairdresser, Stonehenge (twice!) and The Greatest Showman.
What’s Fuelled Their Fire?Nicola talks us through the five boxes which create the business strategy from A.G. Lafley’s Playing to Win which she sees as the precursor to the Traction model and Judith enlightens Nicola on the topic of PayPal Credit.
Focus of the WeekCristina Palma talks about social changers and professional volunteers who pay to do up to three months in a voluntary post learning something useful while contributing to the project.
She mentions Toms Shoes and Pencils of Promise and Skilled Impact India-UK. Their mission is "We are a social enterprise offering responsible volunteer opportunities for individuals who want to share their skills, immerse themselves in a new culture and make a difference." And here's Cristina's interview with Anna Moran on Facebook.
There are three important principles in taking up any such opportunity - cultural values, the slower rhythms of life in India and Africa and adapting to that, and the importance of rewarding and meaningful work as a volunteer in that it must work for both sides, being more meaningful when you receive as well as give.
Words of the WeekJudith picks Friendship and Nicola picks Sleep.
Project UpdatesNicola’s taking a phone call later this week which may lead to a JV (joint venture).
Who or What’s Impressed?SuRie from the UK, Netta Barzalai the Israeli winner and Graham Norton, all in the Eurovision Song Contest plus Glenn Warner’s second video.
