Chat with the renowned musician Bindhumalini - Part 1 - Episode 37

Listen to a detail chat with Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy, popular singer and composer.  She has won National Award and Filmfare award as best playback singer for a Kannada film she composed and sung songs for.

She has chosen to get trained in Carnatic and Hindustani as well as many other art forms and pursued multiple academic paths as well.

She has chosen to follow her passion and strived to explore different avenues and genres in music, from Kabir to several women poets across the centuries.

As a huge fan of her music, I feel so happy to present this chat over 2 episodes. In the first episode, we focus on her initial training in music and many other areas, what it means to try out various things and what influences our individual journeys. She talks about winning the award, discovering Kabir and the power of music, as well as facing judgements, in this first part.

What the New Indian Woman podcast is about

As you may already be aware, this podcast has 2 focus areas. One, We examine the challenges faced by today's Indian woman and proposes ACTIONABLE strategies in the Indian context, on a wide variety of topics - right from identifying their passion to better productivity and parenting.  Second,  We meet women who chose to aspire or have a dream beyond their defined roles  and facilitates sharing of what worked and what didn’t, for them. Today's episode falls in the second category.

And in the process, my aim is to help  you, The New Indian woman, to realize your potential, chase your dreams and aspirations, utilize the wonderful opportunities available in today's world.

What's in this episode:

Bindhumalini starts with her journey into the world of music  and her formal education across 2 graduate degrees, a Post Graduate Degree and a Diploma across various areas. She chooses to analyse these trials  from different perspectives and makes this very clear message - "How I apply skills and what I use it for is very important for me". The learning for us starts, right from the first few moments of this episode! And there's more to come..

Some of the questions she responds to and thoughts she articulates are :

  • Trials and failures - or is there something called failure - importance of having fun
  • What made her choose the not so convention route in music ?
  • Questions on who I am and why certain things are done, need to look at music from a fresh perspective.
  • The need to break things down and then reconstruct and the exciting possibilities that emerge
  • Being immersed in music also creating a demand
  • Curiosity vs rebellion
  • Importance of saying "I don’t know" to children
  • What Kabir means to her and how her sister's book helped in that
  • How she sees music and the importance of lyrics
  • How it is important to listen to music for anyone to be able to produce music

She then shares how she felt when she heard about winning the National Award and how something like this can never be a goal. And why she is extra happy about that particular song and movie! We then chat about the topic of judgements and stereotypes and the questions these trigger…

Yes, of course, the chat continues and you need to wait for Part 2 to listen to her talk more - on topics you rarely get to hear from renowned people!
