Leading to Inspire Legacy, a Fireside Chat with Angela Provost and Elora Turner

In this special episode of Movement Maker: The Podcast, Terri Broussard Williams interviews Angela Provost, a sugar cane farmer in Louisiana and changemaker whose story is a part of “Find Your Fire.” As Terri says, no movement moves alone.

Angie’s movement is amplified by Elora Turner, co-founder of Bhoomi, a sugar cane water company that collaborates with Provost Farm. Elora joins Terri and Angie for this conversation.

Terri reads a little from her book while Angie + Elora elaborate about the growing scarcity of Black farmers in Louisiana and how we have the power to change this alarming fact, create partnerships for change, and raise awareness around the need for more Black growers, Black sugar cane growers in particular, and to tell the world all about sugarcane and its underrated glory.

Listen to Angela’s story and learn about the journey of Bhoomi cane juice from India to Louisiana. Angie + Elora are truly turning moments into movements together!

About The Host:

Terri Broussard Williams believes that leaders turn moments into movements. She also believes that anyone can be a great leader. Terri explains that movements can be as big as passing a law, building a church, or starting a nonprofit. They can also be as small as giving to someone in need, showing kindness, or helping students at a school get gym equipment.

This podcast is here to help you with the HOW and WHY people build movements. Terri breaks it down each time using the #FirestarterFormula which is: find your cause, build a community to help, communicate your vision, and work to see change. In each episode of this podcast, we’ll take a look at one of the four pillars of the #MovementMakerTribe including philanthropy, policy change, movement-building, and the movement from within.

This edition of Movement Maker: The Podcast is a special fireside chat with firestarters, where Terri introduces you to the changemakers in “Find Your Fire.”

Episode Notes:

Moderator/Host: Terri Broussard Williams, Founder, Movement Maker Tribe + Social Impact Strategist, Lobbyist

Very Important Guests:

Angela Provost of Iberia, Louisiana, Farmer at Provost Farms, advocate of the black farming community, cousin to Terri, and #MovementMaker.

Provost Farm LLC is committed to supplying resources that promote equity and food security to marginalized communities. The farm was created in 2018 as an agriculture and advocacy center to preserve the ancestral legacies of South Louisiana’s Farmers of Color. They cultivate historically African and Indigenous diasporic crops for  sale and distribution to other minority owned businesses.

They apply the wisdom of their Afro-Creole ancestors as a way to acknowledge the historical significance of black sugarcane growers and move forward toward fair and impartial institutional practices. They draw on the efforts of many progressive networks that connect rural and urban communities in order to heal damage created by centuries of “plantation” practices. They envision Provost Farm LLC as an epicenter of agricultural inclusivity and food justice for the next generation. They believe it is the right of every human being to “Bon Manger.”

Elora Turner of Louisiana, educator, organizer, and the Co-founder & Director of Communications at Bhoomi Cane Water. After teaching in New Orleans for 7 years, Elora and Arpit (her partner in life and business as CEO of Bhoomi) moved to Austin, Texas to launch Bhoomi Cane Water. In partnership with U.S. minority farmers, Bhoomi seeks to revolutionize the story of sugarcane in the U.S. and beyond. Bhoomi makes refreshing cold-pressed cane water elixirs infused with Ayurvedic ingredients for a delicious and hydrating immunity boost. Learn more about Bhoomi's mission to connect humanity to health for people and our planet at DrinkBhoomi.com.

Bhoomi partnered with Angie & June Provost and also Eddie J. Lewis of The American Sugar Cane Lean to work to advocate for equity for all black farmers.
