Charanga Tropical is led by Twin Cities sax and flute player, Doug Little. Doug began studying Cuban music in 2002, and founded Charanga Tropical in 2006. A charanga band brings together voice, flute, strings, percussion, piano and bass, and plays a lot of the Cuban dance form known as Danzón which combines African rhythms and European classical music. In 2015, Charanga Tropical played a Danzón festival in Cuba and hopes to go again. Lately, it’s been playing a monthly 5 pm show at Icehouse in Minneapolis, and on Tuesday night Oct 10, the group’s first Tues 9:30 Icehouse show. It’s a great opportunity for dancers and listeners. When band leader Doug Little got together with Phil Nusbaum, Doug told how validating it was for this Minnesota group to play Cuban music for Cuban audiences.
