Iconography

53 EpisodesProduced by Charles GustineWebsite

How do we understand the places we visit (and even the places we’ve never been)? As a shorthand, we use agreed-upon touchstones - famous places, famous people famous foods, and, of course, dreams. Dreamed-up people and dreamed-up places and dreamed-up things. This podcast looks at a culture's icons … read more

Iconography Joins Hub & Spoke Collective

Hub_Spoke_Primary_Color.pngBig news Iconographers! Iconography is the newest member podcast of Hub & Spoke, a collective of independent, high-quality, story-driven podcasts based in Boston, Massachusetts. I've been a fan of a lot of the shows in the collective for a good while, and have had the pleasure of meeting many of the creators now that we live in the same metropolis. Iconography is a perfect fit for what they're striving to do, and I'm honored to be joining forces with them.

If you had any doubt about whether this was meant to be, check out this episode of Soon-ish, A Tale of Two Bridges, from technology journalist Wade Roush. I'll give you some time…

Yeah, completely independent of one another, Wade and I both wrote episodes about beautiful old bridges that were failing to do bridge things and the new glorious bridges next door. My bridge was torn down and replaced with a very adequate, unglamorous bridge. His bridge, after much debate and many many more years than had been expected, was renovated (it just completely reopened this month.)

When I heard this episode, I knew we had to be podcast friends. Now Iconography has a lot of podcast friends. The art history podcast The Lonely Palette (a favorite podcast of mine for years). Ministry of Ideas, a podcast about the ideas that shape our world.  Hi-Phi Nation,  the first story-driven, narrative podcast on contemporary philosophy. And another new member of Hub & Spoke, Culture Hustlers, an interview podcast located at the intersection of art and business.

So what does this mean for Iconography? Nothing about the podcast will change - it will still be the same podcast, produced by one man. Any changes to the format in Season 2 were planned long before the collective came into the picture. All it means is that I'll be a much more supported, much happier podcast creator. I'll be shouting out my fellow Hub & Spoke shows in episodes, telling you what interesting things are coming out in the rest of the collective. (They're all interesting.) And they'll be supporting Iconography as it grows.

And no, just because it's a Boston-based collective doesn't mean Iconography will now be about Boston forevermore. The Hub in Hub & Spoke is Boston - and we'll get to why in a future episode - but the spokes are meant to stretch around the globe. So in due time, Iconography Season 2 will end, and Season 3 will take us to some new region and explore a new set of icons.
