#50 - Ik zag hoe zwart ik was

Een witte joodse vrouw op de bres voor Afro-Amerikaanse dichters.

Het leven van Rosey Pool, geboren in 1905 in Amsterdam en gestorven in 1971 in London, raakte aan vrijwel alle grote gebeurtenissen in de 20e eeuw. Vaak bevond ze zich in het oog van de storm. Als activist, socialist, vervolgde jodin en lesbische vrouw, kwam ze op voor Afro-Amerikaanse dichters en schrijvers. Haar bloemlezingen met door haar vertaalde gedichten vonden een gretig publiek in de jaren ’50 en ’60 van de vorige eeuw. Ze leek vergeten en verdwenen, tot Lonneke Geerlings in 2020 promoveerde op haar biografie.

In deze documentaire is het n-woord enkele keren te horen. De maker Sandra Rottenberg hierover:

“I am not your negro" schreef de auteur James Baldwin in 1979. Met die zin wordt in één klap duidelijk waarom we het vermaledijde n-woord nu niet meer gebruiken.

In de jaren ’50 en ’60 van de vorige eeuw had het woord neger nog niet die connotatie. En omdat dit een audiodocumentaire is over een vrouw die er juist alles aan deed om Afro-Amerikaanse dichters en schrijvers een podium te geven in de jaren ’50 en ’60, komt het woord dus af en toe voor in een historische context.”
