Hernan Carvente

In this episode, Hernan Carvente speaks about developing a drinking habit at the age of 8-years old as a response to domestic violence, to joining a gang, to going to prison at 16, to being a national leader in juvenile justice reform. And, he identifies as a feminist, y'all!!!! Yes!   Hernan is a Program Analyst at the Vera Institute of Justice, where he works on program development, improving conditions of confinement, and incorporating youth and family partnerships in facility-based and statewide juvenile justice policy reform. Mr. Carvente has conducted trainings with policymakers, researchers, students, and professionals in probation, child welfare, juvenile justice and corrections. His passion for reform stems from his own personal experiences in the juvenile justice system. He was awarded the “Next Generation Champion for Change Award” by the MacArthur Foundation and the “Spirit of Youth Award” by the Coalition for Juvenile Justice.   To contact Hernan visit the following:
