Hello listeners!
Last episode of 2017 and I wanted to bring you an episode to help you end the end right: a goal setting episode! As a recovering procrastinator, I have researched many ways of goal setting and I have found a formula that works for me.
First, we start with a 2017 review. We must acknowledge the year and be prepared to let it go.
If you were to name 2017. What would that name be?
2017 Review:
What did you accomplish?
What can you celebrate?
What lessons did you learn? If you can categorize them, that’s great
What meaningful connections did you make that helped you reach your goals?
What habits did you create or cultivate that help you spark your mind and body?
What are you excited to carry over from 2017 to 2018?
Then we set our intentions for each of the categories of our life wheel:
Now we're ready to set our 2018 goals. We're going to use the S.M.A.R.T. method:
S - SPECIFIC OR SIGNIFICANT
As many details as possible. What is it that you really want and why? For example, some people say go to the gym. Okay, a specific goal would be go to the gym 3x per week before work for 1 hour each time for the rest of the year.
M - MEASURABLE OR MEANINGFUL
This is the how. How will I know I completed the goal? How much change do I need to create in my life to make this happen? In the example we’re using, we can measure our small accomplishments each week, each month and ultimately by the year. We can establish parameters also, life happens. Using the gym example, you can say that you’re allowed to miss 2 workouts per month.
A - ATTAINABLE OR ACTIONABLE
Is this possible? Is it a reasonable stretch? Am I setting myself up for success?
R - RELEVANT OR REWARDING
Is this goal meaningful to me? Is this complimenting a slice of my life wheel? Is succeeding at this goal make me feel whole? Is this going to prevent me from achieving a more important goal? Am I ready to commit to these goals?
T - TIME-BOUND OR TRACKABLE
When will this goal be considered complete/accomplished?
When do I start taking action?
What immediate deadlines do I have to do today to get this goal started?
After we have our S.M.A.R.T. goals set, then we determine our rewards and feelings when the goal is achieved and we begin our milestone plan.
Lastly, we're going to write a contract where we commit to finish these goals!
