#63 | Whip It II: Whip It Good!

Episode description

We asked our listeners to nominate a film by an A-list female actor for our movie stars-turned-directors mini-season, and Whip It won by a landslide. Which is weird, because Drew Barrymore's directorial debut totally flew under the radar when it was released in 2009.

Turns out a lot of our listeners know and love it though - which is understandable because there's a lot to like in this movie! It's a fabulous cast (Ellen Page! Kristen Wiig! Juliette Lewis!) an interesting subject matter and everybody involves seems like they're having a lot of fun.

Join us this week as we play spot-the-stunt-double, discuss 40-year-old women acting like frat boys and debate whether this movie would have worked better as a Glow-style Netflix series.

Oh yeah, and because we always want more Juliette Lewis in our lives, we also pitch some sequel ideas, including an All About Eve-style story of Ellen Page's Babe Ruthless being usurped by a younger, more media-savvy upstart and a role reversal in which Page attempts to push her daughter into Roller Derby when all she really wants to do is compete in pageants...

Beyond The Box Set is a popular British movie podcast in which two movie-loving idiots take a classic standalone movie each week, and attempt to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen.

We're available on all major Podcasting platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify and more. We're also active on most forms of social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Just search Beyond The Box Set and we should come up.

If you really want to support the show, we also host a range of exclusive bonus material on Patreon - including our cinema review show Beyond BTBS, the chance to choose a movie for us to cover on a future episode of the main show, and a regular 30 second ad slot which you can use to plug almost anything you like. We offer all of our incentives on a 'pay what you feel' system, so whether you choose to donate $2 per month or $15,000 per month, you'll have access to the same great bonus content. We'll probably figure out something extra nice to do for you if you choose to donate the latter, though...
