1. Introduction

    There is no doubt that jumping is one of the basic qualities that must be continuously exercised by the basketball player. The fight for the rebound, the jump shot, the entrances to the basket, the attempt to block the opposing player who shoots, even the initial jump that starts the game shows this.

    Due to its incidence in all these mentioned plays, the jump must be the object of special attention on the part of the physical trainer. However, it should be noted that, although the preparation of the jump must be worked with all the players, it must be done in a special way with the pivots and forwards. According to Lorenzo's estimate (1) , the average number of jumps in a game would be 100 for centers, 71 for forwards and only 25 for point guards.

    This article is intended to provide a basic reference guide for novice or veteran coaches who wish to vary their methods or offer players a greater diversity of exercises in relation to improving jumping ability in basketball. It is based on the experience of the authors as physical trainers of various senior teams -both male and female- of this sport over the last ten years, and it reflects what experience has shown as more appropriate in relation to with the development of this quality.


2. Previous considerations


    Before going directly to the jump physical preparation plan, a series of initial premises or considerations must be pointed out that will be followed in this analysis for your better understanding. These preliminary considerations are:

  • The present work is carried out based on the situation of a team with an availability of only three days a week, and for approximately one hour, for physical preparation, for which only one of these sessions will be used to develop jumping capacity, and especially in the first part of the season
  • The preparation set out does not have to be a rigid and immovable plan, but can be varied - indeed, it must be done - depending on both the needs of the players and the circumstances of the team in qualifying and their objectives to be achieved.

    On the other hand, there are many divergent opinions regarding a much debated question about whether physical preparation should be done on the pitch itself or off it. Thus, Manzano thinks that this type of work should not be taken off the field since, according to him, “ For the players, it is difficult to convince them of the importance of the quality work that is carried out off the field ”, because “ as it is not they have done in their life, they don't believe in it ” (2). A very poor argument, in our opinion, since precisely one of the tasks of the physical trainer will be to convince these players of the usefulness of such work. Utility that, on the other hand, they will begin to appreciate when they see positive results, which will be the second job of the physical trainer. On the other hand, the freshness and amenity that off-court work brings is beyond any doubt, and it is sometimes the players themselves who request it, whether in the pool, outdoors, in the gym or anywhere. another enclosure.
